Boys Basketball Roundup: Beverly Hills can not catch up to Serra’s speed at the Westchester Tournament
Beverly Hills had a surprising 29-25 lead on Serra at halftime and pushed the lead to seven in the early moments of the second half.
Then it all went down hill from there.
The Cavaliers sped up the pace of the game and the Normans broke down on both side of the ball in a 66-53 loss in the first round of the Westchester Tournament.
Beverly Hills’ center Ronan Massana had 12 of his 18 points on the first half, but the pace forced them to rely too much on outside shooting and away from their inside presence leading to numerous fast break opportunities for Serra.
Boys Basketball Roundup: Westchester gets big win despite sloppy offense; St. Monica, Culver City and University all victorious
If there was any doubt how good Westchester is this year, the Comets provided how much talent they have in a 72-60 victory over Long Beach Poly to advance to the face host Redondo in the semifinals of the Pacific Shores Tournament.
While Westchester (2-0) led throughout most of the game, that did not mean head coach Ed Azzam was pleased by his team’s performance.
Their offense looked confused at times and the normally patient Azzam seemed annoyed by his squad’s inability to follow instructions.
“They are trying to listen. We are getting three out of the five [players on the court] to do it,” Azzam said. “Not upset; not pleased. Listening is just not one of our strengths.”
Palisades’ girls basketball team struggled early last year, but they looked like an entirely different squad by opening their season with a 56-22 victory over Santa Monica in the first round of the Palisades Invitational Tournament on Monday.
The Dolphins began the game with 17 consecutive points until the Vikings finally got the board on a pair of free throws by Carissa Cueva with two seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Palisades’ full court press continued to frustrate Santa Monica the entire night as 13 minutes came off the clock before Erica Tejada made the first field goal for the Vikings. It was one of only two Vikings field goals in the first half as the Dolphins held a 34-8 at the break.
Getting off on the right foot is a big change for Palisades from last season. In 2012, they began the year 4-15 before turning things around in league and were one playoff win away from making the Division I State playoffs.
St. Monica is the only westside team to qualify for the Northeast (Division XIII) Playoffs. The Mariners will travel to second-seed and defending section champion Rio Hondo Prep on Friday.

When St. Monica girls basketball coach John Skinner moved over to the boys side after winning the school’s first CIF sectional title, it seemed the Mariners would be hard pressed to find someone who could duplicate that success especially losing All-CIF players Melissa Maragnes and Briana Harris.
What they picked up was an experienced coach with a history of turning around a struggling program when El Segundo’s Kelly Evans was named their next head coach today.
Evans had spent the last five years at her alma mater taking a 7-19 squad in her first year to back-to-back 15-13 seasons, including a berth in this year’s Division 4A playoffs.
[Editor Note: A previous version of this article stated the LA University would be in the tournament. It is University High of Irvine.]
