Girls Volleyball: Marymount assistant Sean Fallowfield named new St Bernard coach
Marymount assistant Sean Fallowfield has been hired as the new girls volleyball coach at St. Bernard.
He help guide the Sailors to consecutive CIF Division I State Titles under head coach Cari Klein and was also an assistant at Golden West College during its two junior college state titles.
“Adding Sean to our team is another step in the direction towards excellence that we are striving for at St. Bernard. I am confident that his energy will invigorate the program,” said St. Bernard co-principal Dr. Cynthia Hoepner in a statement.
During his collegiate playing career, Fallowfield earned All-American honors at UC Santa Barbara and was the JC Player of the Year at Santa Barbara City College.
Crossroads and Malibu win Southern Section Academic Awards
Crossroads School and Malibu High were among the schools that had teams honored by the CIF Southern Section for academic success it was announced by the section office.
The Santa Monica-based Crossroads boys’ volleyball team finished first with a 3.71 grade point average in the under 1,500 enrollment division. Its boys’ cross country team placed second to Pasadena Poly with a 3.83 GPA and the girls’ cross country team was second to Pilibos with a 3.86 GPA.
Malibu won the under 1,500 student category for softball with a 3.85 GPA ahead of Marymount who players had a 3.77 GPA.
The only westside public school on the list was Santa Monica’s boys’ volleyball team who placed third in the over 1,500 student category with a 3.66 GPA behind Pennisula’s 3.75 GPA.
Girls Basketball Playoff Roundup: Windward breaks the triple-digit mark in victory
It was no surprise that Windward had little trouble in their opening round game against Costa Mesa, but the Wildcats crossed the triple-digit mark in a 100-21 to begin the Division 4AA playoffs.
Jordin Canada nearly had a triple-double with 26 points, nine steals and eight assists. Courtney Jaco also scored 26 along with eight rebounds and Kristen Simon had 17 points and 11 rebounds as top seeded Windward was never challenged in the game.
St. Monica’s second-half defense gets them past St. Matthias
St. Monica shut out St. Matthias for the first 11 minutes of the second half in a 52-18 blowout victory in the Division 4A opening round.
Girls Basketball Roundup: Grudy’s free throw saves Notre Dame Academy
Danya Grundy made a free throw in the final moments of the game to help Notre Dame Academy hang on to a 58-57 victory over Marymount in Sunshine League play.
The Regal Gryphons nearly saw there 13-point third quarter lead evaporate as Marymount tied the game at 57, before Grundy was sent to the free throw line with two seconds left.
The senior missed the first one but hit the crucial second attempt for the upset win.

Girls Basketball: Shorthanded Marymount loses to Amino South in OT
Sankia Braxton layup of a missed free throw in the final twenty seconds of overtime help Animo South survive a shorthanded Marymount squad 49-46.
Braxton finished with 18 points but it was a huge offensive rebound of Quinada Powers’ missed free throw that clinched it for the Panthers.
Marymount forced to play with four players when Rhapsody Washington picked up her fifth foul with 1:34 remaining in overtime of a tied game.
Amino South (10-3) had numerous chances to put the game away at the free throw line, but Powers missed all eight attempts in overtime and the Panthers made only 4-of-22 from the charity stripe.
