St. Monica’s defense holds strong in upset of Boron
When the clock hit triple zero, fans raced onto Corsair Field to celebrate St. Monica’s thrilling 19-16 victory over Boron to advance to the Northeast Division semifinals.
Boron has been an offensive juggernaut as of late, averaging nearly 63 points in their last six games, but the Mariners defense was strong throughout the the night forcing three key interceptions.
A crucial moment in the game came with one minute left in the second quarter when Boron was on the five-yard line. Quarterback Austyn Fink pass was tipped and intercepted by senior linebacker Michael Cueva preserving a 3-0 at the half for the Mariners.
Football: St. Monica playoff game is a long way from home
St. Monica second-place finish in the Santa Fe League has them packing in the sprawling Northeast Division.
The Mariners will head north 150 miles to take on Kern Valley, the second-place team in the High Desert League.
This is not the first time St. Monica will had to travel such a long distance for a playoff game. Last year they had a shorter trip of only 110 miles when they faced California City. They lost that game 38-14.
Below is a playoff pairings in the Western Division:
Football: Santa Monica, Inglewood and Culver City have tough paths in the Western Division
Ocean League champions Santa Monica along with second-place Inglewood will be at home during the first round while Culver City will travel to central California as the Western Division playoff brackets were announce earlier today.
Santa Monica hosts Templeton and would be on the road against the winner of Serra vs. Oxnard. If they make it to the semifinals, the Vikings would face undefeated Lompoc.
Inglewood takes on Morro Bay at Coleman Stadium and head coach Stephen Thomas is grateful that his team may not have to travel until the semifinals if they advance that far.
“”Glad to have a home game. If we win, we get to host Chaminade in the 2nd round. What fun,” said Thomas.
Culver City one-point victory over Morningside earned the Centaurs the final automatic bid and will travel to Goleta to face Dos Pueblos.
Below is a playoff pairings in the Western Division:
Football: Windward in, Brentwood out in Mid-Valley Division playoffs
With a little luck, Windward earned their way into the Mid-Valley Division playoffs.
The Wildcats (5-3) won a coin flip for the final automatic bid in the Alpha League after finishing in a three-way tie for third place with Brentwood and Viewpoint. Windward will travel to face fourth seeded San Dimas.
That flip hurt Brentwood (7-3) who had a higher ranking than both Windward and Viewpoint. However, a 23-19 loss to Viewpoint was the tie-breaker and left the Eagles out of the playoffs. The Mid-Valley Division has only one at-large berth which went to Viewpoint.
Below are the Mid-Valley playoff pairings:
Temple City at Paraclete
Montebello at El Monte
Schurr at San Marino
Windward at San Dimas
Northview at Sierra Canyon
Arroyo at Bell Gardens
Covina at South El Monte
Viewpoint at Monrovia
